Excessive intake of vitamin B6 may result in nerve damage, which has led the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to revise its safe upper limit for the vitamin in 2023. In light of this change, the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) tasked the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) with evaluating maximum levels of Vitamin B6.

As part of the assessment, the RIVM analysed various intake scenarios and reviewed incident reports of nerve-related symptoms submitted to Lareb, the Dutch pharmacovigilance center. The institute suggests additional research to identify which groups may be particularly vulnerable to adverse effects from vitamin B6.

The RIVM also recommends that the ministry consider introducing mandatory warning labels on products—such as food supplements—that contain added vitamin B6.

A full version of the RIVM’s findings is publicly available.
