Europe

As of October 17, 2023, the EU’s new microplastics restriction under the REACH regulation has officially entered into force (Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055). This restriction bans the sale of products containing intentionally added microplastics, including synthetic polymer microparticles found in items such as cosmetics and food supplements.

The implications are significant: companies involved in manufacturing, importing, or selling such products must reassess their product lines and compliance status. While certain exemptions exist for medicinal products and medical devices, these must be carefully verified – and reporting obligations may still apply. Applicable derogations may be limited in time to allow for the necessary assessments and, if needed, reformulations.
