Health claims for food supplements are strictly regulated. For supplements containing plant extracts (botanicals), most claims fall under the so-called on-hold regulation. This means that the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has not yet issued a final opinion on these health claims. Nevertheless, on-hold claims may be used, provided that certain conditions are met.
To support this process, KOAG KAG has published a detailed step-by-step guide outlining where to find the relevant information and under which conditions on-hold claims may be applied correctly.
This plan provides answers to the following questions:
- How do you know if your ingredient qualifies for an on-hold claim?
- What exactly are the ‘Conditions of Use’, and how do you check whether your daily dosage complies?
- Where can you find the original information from the EFSA dossier?
