Europe

To prevent and mitigate shortages of critical medicines in the European Union, the EU commission has adopted a couple measures. These measures aim at ensuring adequate supply of medicines or managing medicine shortages. Examples of planned measures are:

  • Regulatory flexibility
  • A Union list of critical medicines
  • Establishment of a voluntary EU solidarity mechanism

In addition, the Commission plans to set up a “Critical Medicines Alliance” which will focus on a number of critical medicines with the highest risk of shortages and the greatest impact on health systems.
