The European Commission had published an update of the Guidance document describing the food categories in Part E of Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on Food Additives.
In this new version the following changes are made:
– update of Category 17, in line with the amendment of Category 17 in the Food Additives Regulation (no more Category 17.3, chewable tablets included in 17.1 and syrup included in 17.2).
– addition of a definition of “chewable form” that is in line with the industry’s position and does NOT exclude chewable tablets.
– no inclusion of the controversial aspects of the definition of “syrup”. As there is no consensus among Member States on these aspects, further discussions will continue and possibly lead to a new version of the guidelines if and when consensus can be reached.
